Heavy Equipment Logistics What to Look for In Companies and Tools

Posted on August 28, 2018

Heavy equipment logistics requires the expertise to move enormous objects safely. We as humans have been doing this ever since the Egyptians built the pyramids, but fortunately, heavy equipment transportation has gotten a bit better these days. If you need a large item moved, whether that is heavy equipment or large boat transport, there are certain things you should look for in a heavy equipment logistics company. You also need to look for equipment movers who have the right tools to take care of the job.

Using the Right Tools

There are number of important tools that make heavy equipment logistics possible. Here are just a few of them:

Toe Jacks

A toe jack is an important little tool for lifting heavy equipment. The purpose of this jack is to lift up the corners of an item. Once the corners are out, skates or skids can be slid in underneath.

Skates and Roller Skids

These two items are wheeled and consist of a square or rectangular platform that can glide across the floor with heavy equipment on it. Roller skids have the added feature of being able to be bolted to the machinery, so there’s no need to ever worry about anything sliding off. For both of these tools, 360° rotation on the wheels is common.

Hand Truck Dollie

These are useful for large pieces of equipment but not ones that are so heavy that they can’t be lifted by a couple people. There are different types of these dollies with different load capacities, while some are made specifically to move very tall items like refrigerators.

Choosing the Right Service

Choosing the right heavy equipment logistics service is an important step in getting your item moved safely and securely. Here are a few tips to follow:

Look for Versatility

Every transportation project is slightly different and it’s crucial, whether you’re moving your tiny house or moving a boat, to work with the company that can make adjustments on the fly as issues come up. For example, they should have a wide variety of equipment available in order to deal with different jobs. It’s also important that they know all the issues that may arise if you’re traveling from one state to another.

Other bonus features in the versatility department are being aware of all the potential fees that could come up in a move, having the storage facilities necessary to house your item, and knowledge of the taxes and governmental fees and regulations that may be involved.

Look For a Good Reputation

Reputation is everything in business and never was that statement more true than when it comes to heavy equipment logistics. It’s important to ask around among other people who have had similar moves and find out what companies have a good reputation for speed, quality, reliability, and price. Companies that have not been in business for very long may be a good deal if they’re offering a great price to start out: but that great price could turn sour if they end up destroying your item because of their lack of expertise.

Ask About Prices

It’s a good idea to get some quotes from a couple different heavy equipment logistics professionals. Then you can compare and contrast them. Be wary of quotes that are too high, but also of quotes that are too low. Be sure to ask if the quotes include everything including all taxes, fees, paperwork charges, or anything else that might come up. If a company’s fee is high, ask them to explain why. They should be able to give you a detailed explanation more than just “we do a really good job.” If the company’s fee is particularly low, keep digging till you find out what it does not include.

Nothing is more important than safety and success when it comes to heavy equipment logistics. You need your bulky item, whatever it is, to be moved quickly and safely. You need to make sure it gets there in one piece and that no regulations are violated along the way. Look for logistics companies with the expertise and the tools necessary to do the job right.
