A point of purchase display can make a difference with product awareness and sales. One of the reasons for the effectiveness of a point of purchase display is because roughly 70% of purchasing decisions are actually made while customers are in a store. This applies even when they may visit an e-commerce site during their decision-making process.

Packaging Digest recently published an article that focused on the consumer decision-making process. According to the research outlined in this publication, consumer decisions are usually made during the last five seconds when they see a well-displayed item on a retail shelf. This points to the major role that packaging design plays in the consumer decision-making process.

A popular and effective option for e-commerce packaging, retail packaging, specialty packaging, and other types of packaging and display needs is corrugated cardboard. At some point, over 90% of products in the United States are either displayed or delivered in this type of packaging. It’s also important to note that corrugated packaging has been the preferred, cost-efficient choice for over 100 years.

One of the many benefits of corrugated cardboard is that currently, it is 10%-to-15% lighter than it was ten years ago. This is due to linerboard lightweighting. In addition to reducing shipping costs for e-commerce packaging and subscription packaging, it can also make a difference when transporting, arranging, and relocating high-end graphic retail and pallet displays.

Another benefit to using corrugated cardboard is that most of the recycled boxes and packages also contain 46% recycled material. In 2012 alone, for example, the United States recovered and recycled 91% of the container-board produced. When businesses participate in reducing waste by recycling, environmentally-conscious consumers will also take note of this.

Recycling boxes and packages obviously makes a significant difference in air quality and other environmental concerns. Not only does recycling lower the production of greenhouse gases, it also reduces acidification and non-renewable energy. When just one ton of cardboard is recycled, for instance, it can also save more than nine cubic yards of landfill space.

When a company decides to rebrand its product line, it’s important to know that old point of sale displays and packaging can be recycled. Furthermore, when corrugated packaging is used for branded boxes and displays, it is structurally-sound and lends itself well to high-end graphics.
