The Value of Making Charitable Donations Help Military Families and the Environment

Donations to veterans

Charity organizations benefit from the donations received by individuals, families, and organizations within the United States. During 2014 alone, the total giving received by charity organizations was $358.38 billion. A recent survey showed that 42.7% of charitable givers donated more during holiday seasons, while 44.4% donated around the same amount throughout the year.

When preparing items for donation, many Americans choose to give to the Military Order of the Purple Heart. This organization provides veterans and their families with a variety of services. It also assists wounded veterans as well as the families left behind by the men and women who have lost their lives in service to this country.

Every year, recent data shows that Americans will throw away an average of 70 pounds of clothing, linens, and other types of household textiles. This is a considerable amount, especially given estimates that the average person in the United States purchases approximately twice as many clothing items as they did 20 years ago.

Household textiles, for example, amount to five percent of the municipal waste that occurs within this country. Just 15% of these types of items are actually recycled or repurposed in other ways.

On a more positive note, however, there are 4.7 billion pounds of clothing donations made every year. While some of these items may be recycled, up-cycled, or repurposed, 45% are worn again. It’s important to note that nearly 100% of these clothing items and various household textiles could be recycled. Furthermore, their condition isn’t an issue.

When individuals, families, and organizations choose to collect and donate clothing and other household items to help families in need, it does make a difference. Since these items won’t be sent to landfills, which is the case with 10.5 million tons that arrive there every year, this is also making a positive impact on the environment.

Used clothing donations for wounded veterans charities can be taken to drop-off locations or conveniently picked up. This makes it easy to donate to charities that provide assistance to military families in need.
